On a gloomy and gray day like today, there are few things that can uplift me. A tall cup-o-joe usually does the trick for me, but today Rothko seems to be the ticket.

There's just something about his beautiful fields of color that transport me to another place. Even the brightest ones manage to be peaceful and quiet.

I had the pleasure of attending a Rothko show in Midtown a number of years back, and was blown away by how immensely powerful his work is in person. The colors simply envelop you.

See more about his life and work here.
