"FOR THE LOVE OF GOD"

By Damien Hirst, 2007
Platinum diamond-encrusted skull, human teeth

The original skull that the piece was modeled on dates back to the 1700s and is studded with 8,601 diamonds. It is the MOST EXPENSIVE piece of art ever created (it sold for $100 million in 2007).

i. am. mesmerized.

"The skull is out of this world, celestial almost...It proclaims victory over decay. At the same time...it represents death as something infinitely more relentless. Compared to the tearful sadness of a vanitas scene, the diamond skull is glory itself." – Art historian, Rudi Fuchs
